What's Going On is Marvin Gaye’s landmark album and one of soul’s great artistic statements. Issued in 1971, it marked a decisive turn from Motown hitmaking towards socially conscious, album-length storytelling, with Gaye shaping a unified sequence around war, poverty, addiction and environmental concern. The title song, ‘Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)’ and ‘Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)’ became defining examples of how popular music could carry protest without losing beauty or grace. Produced by Gaye with the aid of Motown players and a fluid, layered arrangement style, the record helped expand the possibilities of Black popular music and remains widely regarded as a masterpiece.
