Play Bach No.1 is the breakthrough album that made Jacques Loussier’s Bach interpretations a jazz phenomenon. Recorded in 1962 by the trio with Christian Garros and Pierre Michelot, it reworks Bach’s preludes, fugues and toccatas with light swing, fluent improvisation and a sharply defined sense of melody. Rather than treating the classics as novelty material, Loussier showed how Baroque structure could support modern jazz interplay, helping open a durable crossover path between the two traditions.
